Ever wondered how to split a tree with your bare hands? Well this is your chance. In this two day class, you will watch in amazement as you turn a tree into a basket. Spending two magical days in the forest, you will learn everything there is to know about white oak basketry, from selecting, harvesting, hand-splitting, to finally weaving. You will not only weave a wonderful 8” Appalachian-style potato basket, but will also take home enough raw material to carve and weave another of the same basket as well. Each basket will measure approximately 8” long, 8” tall, and 8” wide when finished, and will be woven in with reed weavers. All skill levels welcome, and all tools and materials will be provided.
**Space in this course is limited to 6 students**
  • Day 1:
    • Learn how to identify and select a White Oak tree appropriate for basketry as we walk through the woods talking about sustainable forestry practices, as well as how to fell a tree.
    • Work together to split a whole white oak log using just an axe and a knife.
    • Blow your mind as you split the pieces of that log down into individual growth rings with your bare hands.
    • Cut and shave down your White Oak frame to be woven the next day.
    • We will end the day with the pieces of our basket frame ready to be woven together
  • Day 2:
    • Using the material that we processed the previous day, we will weave an 8” Appalachian-style potato basket shown here. Each student will also be provided enough raw white oak to take home to weave an additional basket using all that they have learned during the course.

  • This class will be held entirely outdoors, either in the forest, or under a primitive shelter. Please dress appropriately for the weather forecast. In the event of heavy rains, we will reschedule the class for the following weekend (June 29th & 30th).
  • This class requires a decent amount of upper body strength, as well as hand strength. If you have concerns about this, please contact me prior to booking via my contact form.
  • Ability to walk on rugged terrain is required. We will also be walking through shallow moving water, as well as on uneven ground through the forest. Waterproof waders are recommended.
  • There will be homemade pastries, coffee, and tea available upon arrival each day. Please pack a lunch and snacks to power yourself through the rest of the day. Hot water will be available throughout the weekend for coffee and tea.
  • If you are coming from far away and would like recommendations of where to stay in the area, let me know and I’d be happy to help out.
